Glasgow School of Art / Newspaper Club

Recently we set a brief with the Glasgow School of Art. The students had to work together to produce a 16 page newspaper.

Yesterday Art and Carolyn Roberts got together to judge the results.  Carolyn is Creative Director of The Observer and led this redesign in 2010.

Number 1

Glasgow School of Art / Newspaper Club

There was a discipline to this idea that we liked. Everything was within a circle. They stuck to this and the paper was better for it. The circles looked good and felt different.

The we saw a note which said you could separate the paper along the perforations and fold it in half to get a completely different experience. We really liked this, it worked really well and was very unusual.

Number 2

This one was very different, in a good way. We loved the way they’d gone all out with the idea. It completely inhabits the paper. Trimming the edges was a brilliant step and made all the difference. The black felt unique. They’d really thought about the format and played around with what a newspaper could be. It had a real physical quality, you’d want to keep this one and take it home.

And all that was before we discovered you could pull it apart and join up the pages.

One criticism, we felt there was a missed opportunity to do a striking cover.

We thought this one was quite weak. For a newspaper called “Freakin out the norms” there were a lot of newspaper conventions inside. It had quite a lot of text inside which we didn’t think was handled very well.

This one had the potential to be interesting, but we didn’t feel they’d pushed the idea enough. We liked the way they tried to get all the different members of the team on each page, but felt this needed more work.

They’d thought about the centre spread which was good, but you couldn’t read the text on the cover which was disappointing.

This one showed lots of promise.

We got excited when we opened this one, but it didn’t quite live up to that early promise.

We liked the first spread and the last spread but felt the typography and the cover let it down.

We really liked this one. It was one of the only ones that gave the reader a change of pace. It was bold and simple. They’d thought about the format and it showed. It was a good use of the medium.

Carolyn particularly liked the JFK spread for these reasons.

Remember remember, it’s a bank holiday weekender

Due to the jubilee of our dear Queen, Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 June are bank holidays in the UK. This means that:

  • We will be closed on both of those days
  • Newspapers ordered on Thursday 31 May will take 2 days longer to arrive in the UK – digital newspapers should arrive on Wed 7 June or Thursday 8 June at the latest
  • Tuesday 5 June’s print run will move to Wednesday 6 June

Newspapers printed tomorrow (Tuesday 29 May) should arrive by the end of the week as usual.

S.E.H. Kelly and great British workmanship

The lovely folks at S.E.H. Kelly have printed another beautiful newspaper. This time it features traditional businesses with an increasingly rare line of work like the UK’s last horn button manufacturer, or a West Yorkshire cashmere mill.

Although they are a thoroughly modern business S.E.H. Kelly draw on this tradition of great British craftsmanship to fashion their own line of high quality men’s clothing (see catalogue above). They have a new workshop at 1 Cleve Workshops, Boundary Street, London, E2 7JD and invite interested parties to pop in for a browse and a chat. It’s open at weekends and by appointment during the week – if you’re quick you might even catch a glimpse of their new newspaper.

Our busiest week yet

As anyone who’s shipped will know:

Shipping digital things is hard, shipping physical things that get delivered on vans is harder.

Making customers happy is hard, delighting them is harder.

Twitter is a very real, raw, place to receive feedback.

Last week was our busiest week ever, and this week looks like beating that. So it’s been incredibly satisfying to see some lovely comments about the thing we ship on Twitter.

Credit for this feedback goes to Anne, Emily and Silje in Glasgow. They are the people who work hard to respond to all the emails we get, answering the many questions we get asked. They are the people who work hard to get orders rushed through for that last minute deadline.
