Minor News Update

Most of the reason for this post is to link to this fantastic thing at McSweeneys, all about the vast superiority of newspapers. But it’s so obviously self-serving just to do that that I’ve appended this minor news update.

This is what we’ve been up to:

1. Management have been in the US, talking to possible partners and planning for our proper North American launch.

2. Engineering have been doing Coding Fist Bumps as they relentlessly improve the site, constantly releasing new features.

3. Customer Service have been servicing customers and have been thinking how we can help people finish the papers they’ve started but haven’t got round to completing. It’s so heart-wrenching to think of those 11 and 15 page papers sitting there, just waiting for the final moment of inspiration. Is there anything we can do to help you clear that final hurdle? (And, to be honest, a bit of extra business wouldn’t hurt right now. It’s been a relatively quiet week.)

4. Design and Sales and Marketing have been locked in a titanic series of Words With Friends games. I guess that might explain the parenthetical statement at the end of point 3.

I say: blank spaces of course! No seriously – I see the lowest order of 5 as a good solution if someone is stuck. For me, as a photographic artist I just have to print. I can’t make improvements or certain decisions without seeing what it’s really going to look like. With the cost of 5 being so attractive, I say print what you have, hold it in your hand and then see if there’s something you can lose, to bring it within the next lower multiple of 4 … Or you just might get some bright ideas and make up the rest of the pages … Or design a spacer that seems appropriate. My default position is: don’t wait for perfection, use what you have because the bus that’s going to run you over has left the terminus.

    Good luck newspaper-makers!

ps. Maybe you could commission different folks to write their words of wisdom on editing. I edit video and I like to visualise myself as a demon with blades for brains when I have to cut down all the lovely footage that just doesn’t serve the purpose. I haven’t made a newspaper of my own work yet though. The one that newspaperclub is printing now is writing from people involved in an Arts & Health writing group, so if something had to go I would go back to the group to make sure they were ok with that decision. I expect that a lot of the work you get in are from community groups or the work of kids and everyone has to have their space, so perhaps it’s not a case of editing out but bumping up with bigger higher res. pics or art-work. Another idea: it would be nice if you could condense in bullet points testimony from customers by way of encouragement to new customers – a kind of don’t lose heart section for blank pages.
